Arlington contracts waste hauling services to Republic Services.

Republic Services handles general trash hauling duties for the city of Arlington (residential and commercial hauling), but they don’t accept all waste and debris via curbside service, including:

  • Construction and demolition debris
  • Yard waste
  • Hazardous materials (paint, oil, etc.)
  • Bulky items (some may be accepted, call (817) 317-2000)

Private dumpster rental companies must be licensed.

All private haulers in the City of Arlington must be licensed and permitted to haul waste.

TIP: All of our approved dumpster rental companies are licensed and permitted.

Arlington is going green.

The city is doing a lot in the way of increasing recycling rates and improving sustainability throughout Arlington and the entire Metroplex.

Much of the waste and debris collected from dumpsters is recycled or otherwise repurposed.

TIP: Work with a locally owned and operated dumpster service, which is almost always the cheapest way to rent a dumpster.  Avoid the most expensive rental options:

  1. Very large, national companies like Waste Management are more expensive than smaller, local companies.

Recycling cycle: What residents need to know

It all starts on Thursdays and Fridays, when many Yuma residents dutifully take their recycling to the curb as a part of the city’s curbside recycling program, which began in May 2013.

20Yard-Ad-Long

The city’s curbside recycling private vendor partner, Republic Services (formerly Allied Waste), picks it up and residents don’t see them again until the following week, when the recycling cycle continues.

But what happens after the roughly 25,000 curbside bins are hauled away from city and county residences?

Not much happens here in Yuma.

The recycling first makes its way to the Republic Services transfer station at 3040 S. Avenue 3½ E.

From there, it is dumped and then loaded onto trucks and hauled off to the nearest processing facility in El Centro, Calif.

That facility sorts and bales about 1,200 tons of recyclables a month, according to Peter Sterenberg, general manager of Yuma & Imperial Hauling, Transfer, Landfill and Materials Recovery Facility at Republic Services.

Of course, he said, that pales in comparison to the 800 tons a day that are processed at other regional plants, such as the ones in Las Vegas and Anaheim.

However, processing really starts in the home.

Sterenberg said that making sure recyclables are “empty, clean and dry” goes a long way in making sure that they are salable.

“Once you collect the material, you bale it,” Sterenberg said. “And so, invariably, the dirty stuff ends up on the outside of the bale.”

He said this is a problem because it is the first thing buyers see when looking at the recyclables. Having dirty recycling, with likely unpleasant odors, can make it difficult to sell and can hurt the market value, Sterenberg said.

Much of recycled goods end up being shipped overseas for repurposing, which can inflate that issue due to it being on a cargo ship for an extended period.

“You’re risking a rejected load,” he added.

Luckily, material like paper and cardboard, which are most likely to be the cleanest, make up a majority of the volume of recycled items — at about 73 percent nationally, according to Republic Services.

Sterenberg said aluminum has the highest value, but accounts for less than 1 percent of total volume of recycled items.

“Paper is one of the easiest things, provided it’s clean, to recycle,” Sterenberg said.

In addition to paper, cardboard and aluminum, the city’s curbside program allows glass and plastics 1 through 7. The most commonly recycled plastics are Plastic 1 (polyethylene terephthalate) and Plastic 2 (high-density polyethylene).

Plastic 1 is mostly clear plastic like water bottles, and Plastic 2 includes things like milk jugs and detergent bottles.

The most important thing about the city’s program, Sterenberg said, is the fact that the curbside bins are “all-in-one recycling” containers. No sorting is required by residents, as had often been required in early recycling programs around the country.

“You don’t have to separate it,” he said. “You don’t have to have one bin for glass, and one bin for plastic, and one for paper. That’s how it used to be (in many places). Now it’s all in one container.”

Making the process easier for people is a priority.

The easier it is, the more likely it is that they will recycle, Sterenberg said.

He suggests putting a recycling container next to trash cans in the home to make it more practical than constantly taking recyclables to the outside bin.

“If you have two containers that are next to each other, your chances of getting recycling volume up greatly increase.”

One goal for Republic Services is to help educate the public on what they can recycle.

“A lot of stuff is recyclable, but on a curbside program, there is some limit,” Sterenberg said. “While if you had a lot of one item (such as plastic bags) — if you have a whole couple tons of that stuff, you can bale it up and sell it. But in a curbside program, it’s rather difficult.”

He suggested taking back plastic bags to grocery stores since Republic Services does not accept them, or not using them at all, instead opting for reusable bags.

Aside from plastic bags, the curbside program doesn’t take bubble wrap, Styrofoam, paint, food-soiled paper and other items that are listed at www.yumaaz.gov (search for “Curbside Recycling Program”).

The city has a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program that allows residents to get rid of many products — oil, batteries and chemicals among them — that cannot be recycled or thrown away with the trash.

The remaining two hazardous waste events in 2016 will be held July 9 and October 8.

Despite such programs, something that shouldn’t be there always ends up in the recycling, Sterenberg said. While it may only be a small fraction of people contributing to the problem, he said that food waste, diapers and even used needles sometimes end up in recycling containers.

He said he urges people not to use recycling bins as an extra trash can, or worse yet, for hazardous waste.

Overall, the city’s curbside recycling program helps to divert 16 percent of material from landfills in the city.

“As residents learn about recycling and choose to recycle, the percentage of recyclables that are diverted from the landfill will increase,” said City Administrator Greg Wilkinson. “Our goal is to achieve a recycling rate of 20 percent in the next few years.”

Wilkinson said the city’s portion of money made from selling recyclables has allowed it to delay the need to raise trash collection fees. It also cuts landfill costs, he said.

“You see less and less going to the landfill every year,” Sterenberg said. “At the end of the day, you’re saving the resources. We find most people have that commitment, and want to be sustainable, and here’s one way to do it.”

Recycling is picked up on Thursdays for subdivisions south of 16th Street and east of Avenue B, and on Fridays for subdivisions north of 16th Street and west of Avenue B.

For those who do not get curbside service, or have a larger capacity of recyclables, the city also has a drop-off location with numerous large bins. It is located at 265 W. 13th St.

Temporary Front Load Containers
2, 4, 6, 8 cubic yard FRONT LOAD containers for temporary contractor use. In addition to our open top roll off containers, we can supply you with front load trash containers for use on your job site. Because construction debris cannot be mixed with trash generated on a job site, it is sometimes necessary to have a separate container designated for papers, food, bottles, and general lunch trash. These containers are not for one time use, they are more appropriate for job sites that will be active for several months or years. They are not meant to replace a roll-off container but instead are meant to be used in conjunction with a roll-off container.
Permanent Front Load Containers
2, 4, 6, 8 yard containers are ideal for permanent service at your business location. Front load containers can be serviced several times per week, weekly or bi-weekly, whatever best meets your needs. Permanent service set up requires a one-year service agreement. Pricing is based on the size of container needed as well as the frequency of service. Front load service differs from roll-off service in that it is not “on call”. Once you determine the frequency that you need, your dumpster will be scheduled on the same day or days each week for service. Call or email us today for a free quote.

DRIVEWAY FRIENDLY dumpsters

DRIVEWAY FRIENDLY dumpsters are mounted on trailers, delivered wheels and all. A true ROLL AWAY dumpster. The metal wheels of our trailers will not drag, scrape, indent, or etch the surface of your driveway like the steel tracks of a traditional refuse dumpster. A traditional roll-off container is loaded and unloaded on a single pivot point and dragged to the truck; with our DRIVEWAY FRIENDLY dump trailers, the weight of the load is evenly distributed onto the wheels of the trailer, which greatly reduces the chance of cracking or damaging the driveway surface. We deliver the dumpster, and then roll away the entire unit. Our standard roll-off dumpsters are available in 3 practical sizes; 12, 15 & 20 cubic yards. Big Truck Garbage Truck Night Rolls Into Town

SHAFTSBURY — In what has become an annual tradition at Shaftsbury Elementary School, the parent teacher organization hosted its Big Truck Night fundraiser Friday evening.

Cool trucks filled the parking lot while field next to the school featured carnival games. Students could purchase tickets, which could be redeemed for tries at games such as Lucky Pond, Lollipop Tree, Penny Toss, Toilet Paper Toss, Dinosaur Dig, Shoot a Hoop, and Sponge Toss. Winners would get tokens, which could be redeemed for prizes at a table set up near the entrance of the school. A bouncy house was also set up for younger students, and refreshments were being sold throughout the evening.

Among the trucks that made appearances at the event were a garbage truck from TAM Waste Management, a rig from Curtis Lumber, fire trucks from Shaftsbury, a dump truck from the town’s highway department, tow trucks from Morse Towing, a cherry picker from Green Mountain Power, a mail truck from the U.S. Postal Service, a cement mixer from Dailey’s, a special operations vehicle from the Bennington Police Department, a truck from the Arlington Rescue Squad, a search and rescue truck and ATV from the Vermont State Police, a tractor, a bucket loader, and more.

Kids could talk to the owners of the truck, who would usually let them climb into the cabin. Sometimes, they were even allowed to try the horns, causing everyone else in the parking lot to jump, parents and children alike.

The event was well-attended, with cars filling the school’s back lot, the lot at Cole Hall, and the sides of Buck Hill Road. The event ran from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.

The Shaftsbury PTO is responsible for events throughout the year, including movie nights, game nights, a family dance, a talent show, and more. Big Truck Night is their biggest event of the year. The organization is currently run by co-presidents Nichole Warner and Linda Poole.

LEED And EARTHCRAFT Recycling And Waste Disposal

You may already be aware of LEED and EarthCraft requirements for your construction project. But if you’re new to these programs, or you’re wondering what you can do to minimize harm to the environment during your construction job, keep reading for more information. Arwood Waste offers services to help site owners and contractors practice better waste management, conserve resources, and protect the environment. That means we combine construction waste management (CWM) and environmentalism to help keep your project clean and earth-friendly, an important component for both EarthCraft and LEED certifications.

What is LEED?

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design. It is a green building certification program that can be applied to projects such as building design and construction, building operations and maintenance, neighborhood development, and more. LEED-certified structures are designed to promote clean energy and renewable resources, as well as conserve money and protect occupant health. For example, the building materials you choose, the sustainability of your site, water conservation, indoor air quality, and a variety of other factors are considered when you strive for LEED certification. The goal of a LEED-certified project is to create an environment that has low environmental impact, promotes well-being, and implements resource-conserving operational procedures. To learn more about LEED, you can visit their official website.

What is EarthCraft?

EarthCraft Virginia is a green building program with a focus on conserving energy, protecting the environment, and promoting healthy homes. Among other initiatives, EarthCraft partners with organizations like ENERGY STAR to help reduce utility bills for home owners. Member builders need to complete some training in the program and then make sure each project meets EarthCraft requirements for environmentally conscious design and construction, air quality, efficient use of resources, utility costs, and other factors. Check out their website to learn more about this excellent program.

So how can A Waste help?

When it comes to establishing an earth-friendly construction site, Arwood can help you implement a construction waste management plan that’s better for both the environment and your bottom line. We understand the waste management requirements for LEED and EarthCraft, and we provide solutions to help you stay on top of these regulations. For example our “One Can” recycling program allows contractors to throw all waste into one container, but we’ll separate the materials for recycling and reuse. That keeps clean wood out of landfills and allows the reuse or recycling of metals, brick, masonry, and other materials. Our goal is to minimize waste and make sure discarded materials are getting a second life, if possible.

Most contractors want to do the right thing for the environment, and proper handling of waste is an important component of a safe construction site. Having the right waste management partner on your side makes it easy to minimize harmful impact during a construction project. Whether you’re striving for LEED or EarthCraft Certification, or you’re just trying to implement the safest practices for disposal of construction materials,
