Friday, October 5 is World Teachers’ Day!

Every day, teachers are working to educate the next generation. Those individuals deserve our gratitude and respect for their hard work and the effort they put into developing intelligent, well-rounded individuals. But World Teachers’ Day is about more than showing gratitude for educators. In addition to showing appreciation, the international celebration is about assessing and improving the educators of the world.

More Than ‘Thank You’

World Teachers’ Day commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the 1966 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. The 1966 Recommendation has served as the standard for addressing teachers’ rights and responsibilities on a global scale.

Each year, governments, NGOs, teachers and experts in the field of teaching come together to celebrate the contributions of teachers, discuss issues around quality education and reflect on progress and challenges in the field of teaching and education. Topics range from institutional policies and regulation to academic freedom and professional development.

How You Can Celebrate

Seek information on issues impacting educators in your community. Advocate for teachers by speaking out in favor of programs that support teachers and raise the standard for education. And, of course, take time to say thank you and show appreciation for your teachers, your children’s teachers and any other educators who have had an impact on your life.
